Hayborough Beach Access Stairs

Hayborough Beach Access Stairs

Design of fibre-reinforced polymer beach access stairs at Hayborough for the City of Victor Harbor, on a site highly exposed to wave action, erosion and a shifting beach profile.

Magryn was engaged by the City of Victor Harbor to design beach access stairs at Hayborough, a site highly exposed to coastal forces. The project aimed to improve public access to the beach while considering the challenges posed by coastal processes, such as wave action, erosion, and fluctuating beach profiles.

The stairs were designed using fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials to ensure durability and resistance to the harsh marine environment. FRP was chosen for its excellent corrosion resistance and long lifespan, making it an ideal material for a structure constantly exposed to saltwater and sand movement. Its lightweight nature also allowed for easier installation and a robust design.

Coastal Processes

The stairs were positioned and designed to withstand regular wave action, including the impact of storm surges and periodic overtopping while minimising erosion impacts.

Driven Piles

To ensure long-term stability, the stairs were supported by driven piles that provided deep footings, critical for mitigating future erosion risks.

Minimised Disturbance

Careful planning ensured minimal disturbance to the surrounding dunes and vegetation, preserving the natural environment.

Sustainable Access

The structure was developed to ensure long-term public access to the beach, considering accessibility and safety for all users.

Erosion Control

The stairs were integrated with the surrounding environment to ensure stability, even as the beach levels change due to ongoing erosion.

This project highlights Magryn’s ability to deliver resilient and sustainable coastal infrastructure, contributing to enhanced beach access while protecting the coastline from the effects of erosion.
