Raisebore Shaft Ventilation Fan Footing

major raisebore shaft

Structural design of a reinforced concrete footing for a major raisebore shaft at the Agnico Eagle Fosterville Gold Mine in Victoria, supporting the reaming equipment for a 5.5 m diameter shaft about 373 m deep.

Magryn provided structural engineering design services for a reinforced concrete footing supporting a major raisebore shaft at the Agnico Eagle Fosterville Gold Mine in Victoria.

The structure was designed to support the reaming equipment used during construction of a 5.5 metre diameter raisebore shaft extending approximately 373 metres below ground level. During the reaming process, the footing was required to withstand loads of approximately 600 tonnes generated by the raisebore equipment.

Following shaft construction, the footing serves as the foundation for a large ventilation fan used to extract air from the underground mine, creating airflow that draws fresh air through the mine's primary access points and ventilation network.

The project required detailed structural analysis and reinforced concrete design to accommodate the significant temporary construction loads while ensuring durability and long-term performance within a demanding mining environment. Particular attention was given to constructability, buildability and integration with surrounding infrastructure.

Magryn's involvement included:

  • Review of geotechnical information

  • Reinforced concrete footing and wall design

  • Heavy structural detailing and coordination

  • Buildability-focused engineering solutions for remote site delivery

The completed structure demonstrates our capability in delivering practical, robust and technically rigorous structural engineering solutions for complex industrial and mining infrastructure projects.
