The proposed Shute Harbour Marina, located adjacent to Airlie Beach in the scenic Whitsunday Islands of Queensland, represents a major coastal development designed to support both residential and commercial growth in this tropical region. Magryn was responsible for the comprehensive engineering design of key infrastructure elements, including sheet pile wharf areas, land reclamation for housing and retail/hotel development, stormwater management, and road networks.
Given Shute Harbour’s location in a tropical cyclone-prone area, all design work factored in the extreme weather conditions associated with this region. Additionally, the challenging geotechnical conditions posed by the site required careful consideration. The presence of soft marine clay, with its potential for post-construction settlement, and underlying volcanic rock presented unique engineering challenges. Magryn meticulously addressed these complexities in the design of the sheet pile revetments and land reclamation areas, ensuring long-term stability and resilience.
The sheet pile breakwater surrounding the marina was engineered to incorporate a trafficable glass fibre-reinforced concrete pile cap, offering both structural durability and accessibility. Throughout the project, Magryn’s design approach balanced technical demands with practical construction methodology, ensuring a robust and sustainable marina development.
