Submarine support cradles

Submarine cradle, Osborne, SA

Design of steel support cradles that hold Collins Class submarines once they are lifted from the water, allowing them to be moved on land between maintenance workshops.

When the Australian Submarine Corporation’s (ASC) Collins Class submarines are removed from the water for maintenance or repairs, they need to be stored in a manner that allows them to be transported on land to the various workshops.

The solution is to place the submarines on a row of steel blocks or cradles that can then be lifted up and moved around by a special transporter vehicle.

Magryn designed several submarine-specific sets of cradles for the ASC, as well as cradles for more general keeled vessels at the Australian Maritime Complex’s Customer User Facility in Henderson, WA.
